The 4th Annual Uptown Charlotte Jazz Fest returns with the sounds and rhythms of some of the world's greatest jazz performers. Following a nearly sold-out third year with record attendance, the festival has truly become a "destination event" for pure jazz enthusiasts, attracting attendees from all across the Southeast.

The festival will begin this weekend, Friday, June 21 at 7 p.m. with smooth jazz artists 5th and York; two of smooth jazz's biggest stars, Peter White and Euge Groove; and jazz/R&B/funk musician Brian Culbertson.

On Saturday, June 22, the festival will kick off with smooth jazz keyboardist and pianist Gregg Karukas. Saturday will also feature Sax in the City. Joining these superstars on the final evening is BWB.

4 (4-ounce) beef tenderloin steaks, trimmed (1 inch thick)
Cooking spray

Preparation

Prepare grill.
Place peppercorns and rosemary in a spice or coffee grinder; pulse until the pepper is coarsely ground. Combine pepper mixture, dry mustard, salt, and garlic powder; rub evenly over both sides of steaks. Place steaks on a grill rack coated with cooking spray, and grill 3 minutes on each side or until desired degree of doneness.

Obama Headed to Mooresville

President Barack Obama will pay a visit to the Lake Norman area on Thursday, stopping at Mooresville Middle School during his planned trip to Charlotte Thursday.

Obama will learn about the school’s cutting edge curriculum, which integrates technology into the learning process, according to The White House.

He is also expected to make a speech about middle class jobs during the visit.

In an advisory, the White House said the president will fly into Charlotte and travel to Mooresville as part of his “Middle Class Jobs & Opportunity Tour.” The tour follows Obama’s State of the Union address, in which he said he believes the middle class ‘is the engine of economic growth.” The White House said:

To reignite that engine, there are three areas we need to invest in: 1) Jobs, 2) Skills and 3) Opportunity. We need to build on the progress we’ve made over the last four years, and that means investing in things that are already creating good-paying, stable jobs that can support a middle class family.

Mooresville Graded School District has received national attention in recent years for its use of technology and other innovations. In February, Superintendent Mark Edwards was named Superintendent of the Year by the National Association of School Administrators.

New Water Sports on Lake Norman

If you live in an apartment in Mooresville, NC there is a new way to cool down this summer. Similar to a wake board, it looks like something straight out of a sci-fi movie, but this new technology is based right here on the ground at Lake Norman.

"To see fishermen in the water who don't usually stop for anything but the fish, to stop and watch this thing for 10 or fifteen minutes let us know it was going to be a big crowd hit," said Flyboards owner Ernest Pruitt.

Pruitt is the first in the Charlotte area to offer this new jet-propelled technology as rentals. The flyboard is similar to a wake board. The Jetovator is almost a sit down version with handlebars for steering. Both are based in a rental operation at Queens Landing in Mooresville.

We found Youtube video shows a personally owned flyboard in action. And in the video you can see some of the jolting spills that come with it. Pruitt says his rentals aren't nearly as extreme. And how high you go, is up to the professional operating the jet ski that acts as the throttle.

"We keep you about 3-5 feet above the water line, and if you start to get too close to the jet-ski itself, we let you down into the water," Pruitt said.

Memorial Day Burger Recipe

May is burger month which happily coincides with Memorial Day weekend. Are you having a BBQ party in the grill area at your apartments in Mooresville, NC? Or maybe you are heading to Lake Norma with friends to relax and celebrate the start of summer. Either way, here is a delicious and different burger recipe. Enjoy.

Cream Cheese Jalapeno Hamburgers

2 cups seeded and chopped jalapeno pepper
2 (8 ounce) packages cream cheese, softened
2 pounds ground beef
8 hamburger buns, split

Directions

Preheat a grill for medium heat. When hot, lightly oil the grate. In a medium bowl, stir together the jalapenos and cream cheese.
Divide the ground beef into 16 portions and pat out each one to 1/4 inch thickness. Spoon some of the cream cheese mixture onto the center of 8 of the patties. Top with the remaining patties, pressing the edges together to seal.
Grill for about 10 minutes per side, or until well done, taking care not to press down on the burgers as they cook. This will make the cheese ooze out. Serve on buns with your favorite toppings.

Cinco De Mayo Appetizer Recipe

Southwestern Egg Rolls

INGREDIENTS:
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 skinless, boneless chicken breast half
2 tablespoons minced green onion
2 tablespoons minced red bell pepper
1/3 cup frozen corn kernels
1/4 cup black beans, rinsed and drained
2 tablespoons frozen chopped spinach,
thawed and drained
2 tablespoons diced jalapeno peppers
1/2 tablespoon minced fresh parsley
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon chili powder
1/3 teaspoon salt
1 pinch ground cayenne pepper
3/4 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese
5 (6 inch) flour tortillas
1 quart oil for deep frying

DIRECTIONS:
Rub 1 tablespoon vegetable oil over chicken breast. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, cook chicken approximately 5 minutes per side, until meat is no longer pink and juices run clear. Remove from heat and set aside.

Heat remaining 1 tablespoon vegetable oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Stir in green onion and red pepper. Cook and stir 5 minutes, until tender.

Dice chicken and mix into the pan with onion and red pepper. Mix in corn, black beans, spinach, jalapeno peppers, parsley, cumin, chili powder, salt and cayenne pepper. Cook and stir 5 minutes, until well blended and tender. Remove from heat and stir in Monterey Jack cheese so that it melts. Wrap tortillas with a clean, lightly moist cloth. Microwave on high approximately 1 minute, or until hot and pliable.

Spoon even amounts of the mixture into each tortilla. Fold ends of tortillas, then roll tightly around mixture. Secure with toothpicks. Arrange in a medium dish, cover with plastic, and place in the freezer. Freeze at least 4 hours.

In a large, deep skillet, heat oil for deep frying to 375 F. Deep fry frozen, stuffed tortillas 10 minutes each, or until dark golden brown. Drain on paper towels before serving.

Many people question whether it is better to rent or buy a home when they are considering moving.

Well, the answer is not universal. Homeownership is a big responsibility and a big commitment. Whether or not you should buy or rent a home depends on your financial stability and several other factors.

First, are you financially able to buy a home? Is your income and credit good enough to be approved for a mortgage? Check your credit report and see if there are any issues you need to take care of. The better your credit, the better the interest rate you qualify for will be, and that can save you thousands of dollars over the life of the loan. Many people consider owning your own home the American dream, but no dream is one-size-fits-all.

While owning a home can increase your net worth, there are potential downsides as well -- additional labor, hassle and cost, to name a few. In many cases, renting an apartment in Mooresville, NC makes sense.

How can you know which is best? Here's what you need to consider:

The minuses of homeownership: Owning a home is a huge time commitment. When you rent, maintenance is someone else's problem and repairs are solved with a phone call. When you own a home, you take on the rolls of maintenance and gardener. When something breaks, you need to fix it.

For example, among other variables, most calculators will ask how much the house you're buying will appreciate annually, as well as how much equivalent rent will increase over time. These are questions you cannot answer.

Buying? Don't get in over your head, keep these thoughts in mind:

To lower the risk of homeownership, buy only what you need, not the most expensive house you qualify for. The average house in 1950 was less than 1,000 square feet. Today it's more than twice that. Remember that whatever you buy, you're going to have to furnish, heat, cool, insure, clean and maintain it.
If you have bad credit and only qualify for a high-interest mortgage, it will cost you tens of thousands of extra dollars over the life of your loan.
The more you put down, the less you borrow and the less risk you take.
Finally, if you decide it's time to buy, hope for appreciation, but don't count on it. However, if the community you're living in has both expanding employment opportunities and population, prices are likely to rise over time.

Rent if You are Moving in a Few Years

If you think you might move again in the next few years, it's a better plan financially to rent an apartment in Mooresville, NC the first five years are the hardest for building up equity.

If you’re thinking about buying a home, one of the first things you should consider is how long you’re going to stay in the area. If you’re pretty sure that you’re going to be moving out of Mooresville within five years, you’re better off renting.

Why is that? There are several reasons.

First, the first five years of the mortgage are the worst years for building equity. The vast majority of each of your payments during the early years of your mortgage is going to go straight towards interest. On a thirty year mortgage, you build approximately 5% of your home’s value in equity during the first five years of the mortgage.

Second, much of that small amount that you do build in equity will be eaten by realtors when you sell. You can try the “for sale by owner” route to try to recoup some of that value, but there are challenges and expenses involved with going that route as well.

Third, what equity isn’t devoured by the realtors will be devoured by the bank. Closing costs are not your friend. They can add up to a noteworthy portion of your mortgage, particularly when you’re really only concerned about the small amount of equity you’d build during that time.

Finally, the housing market isn’t the giant money rocket that it was seven or eight years ago. At best, home prices are stable. In many areas, they’re still drifting downward. You’re not going to make a mint by buying a house, waiting a year, and then flipping it. If you’re reading any personal finance advice that suggests doing so, check when that advice was written. I’m willing to bet it was in 2008 or before.

If you’re thinking about buying a home, one of the first things you should consider is how long you’re going to stay in the area. If you’re pretty sure that you’re going to be moving elsewhere within five years, you’re better off renting.
