North Carolina has experienced steady population growth throughout its history. The rate has never dipped into single digits in any decade since the Civil War. Presently the rate of growth in North Carolina is 18%, which is ranked sixth in the top 10 fastest growing states in the country. This is not surprising considering the fact that its geography includes beautiful mountains and expansive oceans and lakes. The climate is perfect with four mild seasons. Its growth has been augmented recently by the "halfback" phenomenon: Northerners retire to Florida, decide they don't like it and move halfway back north, to mid-South states like the Carolinas. With wonderful places to live, southern style hospitality, great food and comfortable standard of living, what is not to like about North Carolina.
